Obituary for Agnes Gibson-Brenton

In her 97th year, Agnes Gibson-Brenton passed away peacefully at Hospice Georgian Triangle, Campbell House in Collingwood on December 14, 2022.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fawcett Funeral Home, Collingwood. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 2:00pm with Catherine Brown of First Presbyterian Church officiating.

Agnes lived a long, fulfilling life. She enjoyed many happy times with family and friends. Despite heartbreaking losses, Agnes’ resilience allowed her to greet life with optimism. She would often delight people by reciting poetry and singing Irish songs from her motherland.

Agnes was born in Ballyboley, Northern Ireland to Nathaniel and Georgina Brownlee. She grew up and went to school in Ballynure.

Agnes married Robert (Bob) Hutchinson in 1949. Their daughter, Roberta, was born in 1950. They immigrated to Canada in 1957, first living in Owen Sound and then made their home in Collingwood in 1958. Bob passed in 1964 in a tragic accident at Collingwood Shipyards.

Agnes remained in Collingwood working at Gibson’s Fish and Chips and raising Roberta.
In 1977, she married Allen Gibson. They enjoyed travelling together and spending the winters at their condo in Florida. During those years she was fortunate to celebrate the birth of three grandchildren, Heather, Nathan, and Amy. “Gibby” passed away in 1988.

Agnes’ outgoing nature led her to meet George Brenton and start square dancing. They married in 1992 and enjoyed winters in Texas. George passed away in 1995.

In her 90s, Agnes was blessed with four great-grandchildren. Agnes was very proud that her legacy included four generations.

Agnes was involved with the Anglican Church Friendship Club and Blue Mountain Promenaders Square Dance Club. She volunteered with H.O.S.T.S. (Helping One Student to Succeed) in Texas and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Agnes’ sense of style and love of fashion led her to many happy years of employment at Geraldine’s and Chapman’s Ladies Wear.

Agnes is fondly remembered by her daughter Roberta Offord (Rick), grandchildren Heather Walton (Damon), Nathan Offord (Kimberley), Amy Offord (Tristen Flachs), great-grandchildren Saige, Remi, Myer, and Brynn, her sisters Jessie and Dorothy, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Agnes was predeceased by her sisters, Hessie, Rubina, Molly, and brothers, Nathaniel and Trevor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice Georgian Triangle would be appreciated. The family of Agnes wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Jonathan Smith, Comfort Keepers home-care providers, Campbell House staff and volunteers, and Marnie Hillier and Catherine Brown of First Presbyterian Church.
