Obituary for Alan Brown
BROWN, Alan James Peter
Jan.20 1937- Nov. 24 2019
Al Brown, known as the "Town Barber" back in the day, peacefully passed away at Sunset Manor with his four loving children by his side.
Teresa (Jim), Peter, Julia, and Rose (Kam). He adored his two grandsons David (who looks just like Dad!) and Steven.
Al was born in Collingwood on January 20 1937. His parents Gladys and Russell (predeceased) and his sister Jean and brother Norman (both predeceased) grew up on a farm in the mountains. There were lots of stories about the hard winters and the miles of walking! Dad had a grade 10 education and went to barbering school in Owen Sound, where he later owned his first Barber Shop on Pine St. (Pine Villa Retirement Home) and his second on Ontario St. (Ace Cabs) for over 30 years. Every little boy got their hair cut by Al at least once!
And men would go in every 3 weeks whether they needed a cut or not just to listen to the many stories or dirty jokes! Al loved a good time and especially loved to dance! He danced right up until he went to Sunset and then danced with the staff! Christmas was Dads favourite time of year. He loved his family. He took us camping all over and even did a road trip out West and Disney in Florida. Then spent weekends at the cottage on Sturgeon for many years!
Dad was quite social. He loved to talk to people and wheeling and dealing was a lucrative side hobby. Al gave back by cutting hair on his days off (no charge) and played Santa Claus at Christmas for the residents at Sunset. So it seemed fitting that this was Dad's last place of residence! We would like to give a warm thank you to all the staff and volunteers for making Dads stay such a pleasant one.
Dad touched many lives with his warm hand shake, hugs and the twinkle in his eye. And I leave you with a quote that Dad would say when he found out how old he was, "If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!"
Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
