Obituary for Brenda Martinek
Brenda Hope Martinek (Beament)
January 18, 1942 – January 19, 2021
On January 18, 2021, Brenda (Bebe) suffered a brain aneurysm which unfortunately took her life the following day, as she was surrounded by her loved ones. Predeceased by her parents Geoffrey and Hester Beament, her sister Heather and brother Gerry, and beloved husband Joe Martinek with whom they shared 42 wonderful years of marriage together. She is survived by her three sons: Denis (Snezhana), Peter (Suzanne) and Paul (Melissa), her five grand-children: Andrew, Emily, Nicholas, Nathan and Hugo, her sister Lynne (Bob Tuer), her brother-in-law Bill Martinek, and many nieces and nephews. She spent the last 10 years of her life with her loving partner Thomas Park, who passed away in 2020.
Brenda was born in Orillia on Lake Couchiching, the youngest of four children. She attended Havergal College, Western University and graduated as a lab technician at the Women’s College Hospital. Brenda soon found a passion for skiing while visiting Blue Mountain, where she and her friends would rent a room at a local farmhouse. During one of her visits, she met the love of her life Joe Martinek at the Dorchester Hotel in Collingwood. Brenda and Joe were married in 1964 at her family’s home. After a few years living in Clarkson, they decided to move to Blue Mountain to grow Tyrolean Village Resorts established by Joe with his brother Bill and their parents Mary and Albert Martinek. Brenda took over the management of the business for the next 30 years while also bringing up her three children and hosting many late nights at the family home, truly an amazing accomplishment! She dealt with some very interesting guests at Tyrolean Village in those times, making her exceptionally strong and fearless. Brenda was also helping Joe start the Village Shop Antique store at the base of Blue Mountain, where camaraderie, discussion and a few drinks were always mixed with the furniture from Quebec, Ontario and England. Antiques were a true passion for both of them.
Brenda always had a passion for travel: travelling for six months through Europe on their honeymoon, visiting Joe’s birthplace of Plzen Czech Republic multiple times, cruising to many amazing places with Joe and spending the last several winters in Santa Rosa beach with Tom. She also loved sailing on the Georgian Bay, playing tennis and golf (even winning a title at the Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club), and a “little” shopping on the side.
During Brenda’s early years in Blue Mountain, she met a great group of friends that lasted a lifetime. These wonderful ladies have had a regular birthday lunch tour, which still stands today. She felt a great love for this wonderful area, and the last 10 years, took great pride in volunteering at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.
Our Bebe was such a strong, kind, caring and generous person who only saw the best in everyone. She was the pillar of her family and loved them deeply. We will dearly miss her infectious smile, laughter, competitive spirit, and most importantly her.
