Obituary for Dave King

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather & friend. He asked us not to say he passed peacefully (although he did) but that he went kicking and screaming because he said he wasn’t ready, he still had so much left to do. He leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years Lavada, and will be remembered as a proud and loving Father to his daughters Dana (Paul) & Danielle (Dan) and grandchildren Josh (Michelle), Trevor (Brittney), Thomas & Maeve (Chad) & Madison and new addition great grandchild Chayce.

Dave grew up in Ayr Ontario, where he met and married Lavada, they opened a hair salon and shortly thereafter started a family. In 1983 they moved up to Collingwood and opened Tangles & Whiskers hair salon where they worked side by side for many years.

Dave itched to be on the water and decided to buy a boat and start a chartering company, Charter King was born, and he had found his happy place. He dabbled in boat sales at Wasaga Marine and then Dave & Lavada decided to take on running Cranberry Marina and did so for many years. Crazy hard work all spring, summer & fall taking some time in the winter to get away on holidays. Dave was very proud of his 10-year service with the Coast Guard and spent many a day & night out on the unforgiving Georgian Bay waters looking for lost boats and lost people. He could drive that boat through anything and knew the bay like the back of his hand.

Dave could always be found at the sail school, hockey arena, or soccer field cheering on his grandchildren in their various sports. I remember Mom suggesting they go away at the end of January one year and Dad looked at her like she was crazy and stated it was playoffs he wasn’t going anywhere. He loved those kids so much.

In retirement Dave could be found down on his boat, chatting it up with anyone that came by, that man did love to talk.

We will cherish our memories of him and hold them close. He had a great life, he told us, if only it was too short.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at the Bear Estate (300 Balsam St. Collingwood) on Friday July 1, 2002, from 1-4 p.m. As an expression of sympathy donations in memory of Dave may be made to a charity of choice.
