Obituary for David "Garry" Gibson
David Garry Gibson (April 12, 1944 – July 22, 2022)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David “Garry” Gibson on July 22, 2022, in his 78th year at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital after a very brief battle with colon cancer.
Garry leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Yvonne (Dixon), and son Greg. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, friends, neighbours, and coffee buddies.
Born and raised in Collingwood, Garry grew up on Elm Street before building his forever home on Sixth Street. He is predeceased by his parents Susan and William, as well as siblings Henry, Harvey, Thelma, and Paul.
Garry worked as a loftsman at the Collingwood Shipyards until it’s closing in 1986. He also worked as a construction foreman at Rankin’s Landing in Thornbury and maintenance supervisor at Cranberry Village before enjoying a well-deserved early retirement.
During retirement, Garry found a passion for the stock market. He would track stocks diligently, investing wisely and finding much success. As well, Garry had a gift for genealogy. He could often be found at the Collingwood Public Library diving deeper into the backgrounds of each family, taking great pride in the accuracy of each family history.
Garry will be remembered for his stories and many “Garry-isms”, both his stubbornness and his heart (though he’d deny the latter if you pointed it out), and the love and protection he had for his family – including his best buddy “Toto”, who passed in 2015.
We are immensely thankful to Dr. Akinyele, Dr. Langford, and the many doctors, nurses, and staff at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital for their care in his final days. As per Garry’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held on August 9, 2022, with a reception for family and friends from 2-4pm at the Collingwood Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
