Obituary for Hilary Astley-Smith

Astley-Smith, Hilary. (1959 – 2021) Surrounded by family, Hilary passed away peacefully on June 2nd, 2021, at Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood, after a courageous battle with cancer. Hilary is survived by her beloved daughter, Sarah, and mother Eileen Smith; predeceased by her husband, Douglas Astley (2015) and father Dennis (2014). She will be greatly missed by her siblings Christopher (Grange), Frances (Robert), Gregory (Noriko), Helen, and Dominic (Helen), and her many nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered by her many friends and relatives, both here and abroad.

Hilary was born in Manchester, England and emigrated to Canada at the age of 10. She attended Markham District High School and worked in the legal industry. She pursued further studies at Western University during her career. She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed travelling extensively. Hilary and Sarah settled in Collingwood in 2006.

Mum was always there with the kettle on and a hug no matter what the situation. She loved animals and was always happy to cuddle any dog that crossed her path. She “adopted” many friends and loved ones through the years, always ecstatic at the arrival of a new baby or a life milestone.

Many thanks to Dr. Marion Arthur, Dr. Allison Ball and Dr. Laura White of the Royal Victoria Hospital Cancer Centre, Dr. Alyssa Boyd, Nurse Kim of St. Elizabeth and all the wonderful staff of the Campbell House Hospice, for the exceptional care they provided to mum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to the RVH Cancer Centre, Hospice Georgian Triangle - Campbell House, the Georgian Triangle Humane Society, or a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place; there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date when we can gather together.
