Obituary for Hugh Brown

Hugh Tyrrell Brown
1931-2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hugh Tyrrell Brown on September 9th 2022. Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Suzanne (Delorme), his four children; Cindy (Jim Lamontagne), Colin (Diane), Jane (John Gyles) , Nancy (Eric Reynolds), his ten grandchildren; John (Jen), Michelle, Tom, Tim, Josh, Mackenzie (Jon), Brier, Kailey, Garrett (Paige), Peyton; and great granddaughter Julie.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Hugh was known for his gentle teaching style as a school teacher and as a sailing coach. He taught at Hillfield Strathallan College for 30 years. Mr. Brown was a favourite teacher to many students over the years. In the 50’s Hugh founded the RHYC Jr Sailing School which he ran for ten years. This sail training program continues to teach young sailors to this day.

Hugh’s passions apart from his family were sailing, downhill skiing and spending time at his cottage at Lake of Bays. Upon retirement from teaching in the 90’s; Hugh and Sue moved to Collingwood to ski in the winter months, and enjoy their cottage at Clovelly in the summer.

Hugh will be remembered for his warmth of spirit as he made every person he spoke with feel important and respected. He was content with the present, the people he was with and the simple joys of life.

We thank Ellen, Krissy and Valerie; PSW home care workers who have treated Hugh with kindness and respect for the past five years. Thank you is also extended to the staff at Campbell House for their warmth and loving care to Hugh and family. We are grateful for the help and guidance of Dr. Kate Shield.

Celebrations of life will occur on Thursday September 15th at Sterlings Restaurant in Thornbury from 2:00-4:00; with remembrances at 3:00; and in Hamilton at RHYC on November 20th.

Donations can be made to Hospice Georgian Triangle - Campbell House in Collingwood; or charity of your choice.
