Obituary for Joanne Nischan
Nischan, Joanne (nee Kelly) passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday May 28, 2019 in her 73rd year. Joanne will be lovingly remembered by her son Derek and his wife Tricia and grandchildren Findlay and Grayson. She will be deeply missed by her brother Bob and his wife Stacey Kelly, nieces Kendra and her husband Matthew (their children Payton, Samantha and Bryce), Lindsay and Elena.
Joanne grew up in Port Credit where she was an accomplished canoeist having garnered multiple national championships, was a 1967 Pan Am Games silver and bronze medalist and earned a berth for the Olympic Games (which she later declined). Recently she was inducted in the Mississauga Canoe and Paddle Club’s Hall of Fame. She was also an avid skier and worked within the ski industry for many years from Don Valley to Georgian Peaks to Hidden Valley (Muskoka).
An avid fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, Joanne championed her brother and his accomplishments as well as his continued community involvement. She cherished her visits to the Philadelphia area to see her family and friends.
Joanne enjoyed her employment as it gave her the opportunity to help others at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital in Nutrition Counseling and later the Cancer Centre at the Grand River Hospital.
In retirement she embraced her move to Collingwood to be closer to her family and take on her role as “Gammy Bird” to her grandchildren Findlay and Grayson. She relished the opportunity to attend the grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities.
Retirement allowed her to develop her green thumb skills as a gardener. This provided her with a great environment to take her cats outside for some fresh air and adventure.
Joanne was a dedicated member of the Blue Mountain Animal Shelter and past Board member. She was an active member of animal care (specifically medications and adoptions), a devout fundraiser and an advocate for all of her furry friends.
We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of her friends who supported her through the years and most recently over the past year and half as she battled with health issues. Your phone calls, emails, letters, etc. provided Joanne with the motivation she needed to push forward on a daily basis.
As per her wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in Joanne’s memory may be made to the Blue Mountains Animal Shelter.
