Obituary for Kathrin Mackay

Mackay, Kathrin Ute “Kathy” (nee Becker) died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday September 14, 2022, in her 81st year. She is loved deeply by her husband of 57 years, Gordon and their 2 children Ian (Lianne) and Susan (Sarinah). Her grandchildren Stephanie, Ryan and Colin will cherish the memory of her as their extraordinary grandma.

Born in Würzburg Germany to parents Helmut and Beatrice Becker, Kathy came to Canada when she was 12 years old with her mother, sister, stepfather George Baenge and her beloved Oma. Survived by her sister Elke (Jim) Stothers, sisters-in-law Donna (Derek) McNair, Fran Mackay and Ann Smith. She will be remembered with love and respect by her nieces, Karen (Michael) Taylor and Lisa (Greg) Carl, and a number of grand nieces and grand nephews. She will be deeply missed by other extended family members and friends in Canada and the USA.

Kathy and Gordon raised their family in Toronto. Following Kathy’s retirement from Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, a division of Johnson and Johnson, she and Gordon moved to Grand Bend and then Collingwood to be closer to family.

Kathy enjoyed many family gatherings, indoors and out with the Stothers family in Toronto, Crane Lake or Grand Bend. C35 reunions in either the USA or Canada were always a highlight. Kathy was a skilled bridge player. She had a special bond with animals, especially the family and neighbourhood dogs and cats. She enjoyed overfeeding the birds and small animals that became fixtures at the back door. She found comfort and focus during her cancer journey committing to daily dog walks with her pack of dogs and family/friends, on the beautiful trails in and around Collingwood. She was an excellent cook and baker and loved to entertain. Her door and heart were always open.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Derek Nay his support staff and the compassionate medical team at Royal Victoria Hospital - Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre, Barrie Ontario. Special thanks to Dr. Kate Coulson for her professionalism and kindness towards Kathy and the family during this time. Thank you to the gentle assistance of the MAID team for honouring Kathy’s wishes. Thanks also to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital staff for their care.

Kathy was a fighter and in the end to quote Mr. Blue Eyes “she did it her way”. Following her wishes cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. As an expression of sympathy you may wish to donate to a local humane society in Kathy’s memory.
