Obituary for Lloyd Gilbert

Lloyd Gilbert

After 93+ incredible years, October 22, 2022, saw Lloyd Alfred Gilbert join the love of his life Laurie, who passed only nine days earlier. Lloyd and Laurie were married for 66 happy years that were full of great adventures. They were loving parents to Paul (Brigitte Kopas), Julie and the late Peter (Martha) and devoted grandparents to Jenny, Mary, Peter, Kristin, and Robert.

Lloyd was born in Toronto on April 13, 1929, to Jean and Alfred Gilbert. He graduated from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1951. After following his father into the graphics arts industry, the bulk of Lloyd’s successful career was spent with Kodak and in 1957 Lloyd joined the International Division. The Gilbert clan moved around the world seeing the family live in Rochester, N.Y.; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Singapore and Hong Kong until his retirement to Collingwood in 1986. Lloyd loved his stories. He had incredible experiences to draw from all his travels around the world with two of his favourites being when he delivered a ransom in Argentina and opened up the China market, which involved working with top government officials. He truly was an adventurer at heart.

Lloyd and Laurie were engaged in Mont Tremblant and skiing was a shared passion in the winter, while water skiing and sailing kept them busy in the summer. Lloyd joined Osler Bluff Ski Club in 1955 which became a huge part of his life. On the waterskiing front, Lloyd competed in two World Championships and when he retired from competition, he became a world waterski judge and was selected as the Chief Judge for the Long Beach, CA world championships in 1961. After waterskiing, sailing became one of Lloyd’s true passions. His adventures took him on many sailing adventures with the highlight being the retracing of Cabot’s run with some of his best friends. Always one to try new things, later in life he became an accomplished windsurfer which included medaling in the World Masters Championship in Toronto.

Lloyd was extremely gifted working with his hands, whether fixing the motor on his beloved MGA, helping the boys with their motocross bike engines or in his wood shop, he was most happy puttering around fixing everything in-site. Lloyd along with two of his closest friends helped each other build their respective family’s ski cabin at the base of Osler Bluff Ski Club in the early 60s. Lloyd continued his fix-it attitude building complex wooden models right until summer.

Lloyd loved big projects which led him to be a founding member of OslerBrook Golf and Country Club and was directly involved with selling the initial vision with his long-time friend Peter Kingsmill to investors. He stayed involved through the planning and building of the course which he passionately enjoyed for years.

The family appreciates the absolutely remarkable staff at Campbell House in Collingwood who ensured Lloyd’s last nine days were genuinely comfortable. We can’t thank you enough. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lloyd can be directed to Hospice Georgian Triangle – Campbell House. A joint Celebration of Life for both Lloyd and Laurie will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 3 p.m. at the Osler Bluff Ski Club.
