Obituary for Mary McCain

Dearest friends one and all,

After over three long years of battling stage 4 colorectal cancer like the true warrior she is, Mary decided it was time.

Comfortably and peacefully, surrounded by her Canadian family, including her Mum from Australia, Mary passed away on Saturday August 6th, 2022 at Hospice Georgian Triangle in Collingwood at the age of 46.

Survived by her devoted husband Mark; cherished children Hunter and Darcy; beloved parents Douglas and Bernadette Sheehy; brothers Jim (Nicole), Ben, and Michael (Lisa); sisters Laura (Casey) and Diane (Stuart); parents-in-law Greg and Dee Dee McCain; sister-in-law Deb McCain (Matt); and missed deeply by her many nieces (Holly, Tilly, Lucy, Kate, Isla, Imogen, Indie, Ava, Davis and Daphne) and nephews (Sam, Campbell, Finn and Harrison).

We all knew Mary. She personified love, warmth, beauty, passion, and strength. She listened, learned, and taught.

A beautiful wife.
A fierce and adoring mother.
A devoted daughter, sister and aunt.
And a friend. Unconditionally.

Mary was a true nomad who did her best work when she went "walkabout". We are all fortunate that her travels brought her to Canada, where she settled, and raised and nurtured a beautiful family.

Mary had an innate ability to make us feel better about ourselves, saying she fed off of the energy of others without thought of the incredible energy she gave to those around her.

And we all know Mary, meaning this is not goodbye. The energy she possesses is eternal and resides in all she touched, and we know she loved to touch!

Mary loved people. Full stop. That is why all of you who have already shared your condolences have expressed the same feelings: being fortunate to meet and experience the incredible Mary McCain. Like everyone she touched, we love her too.

Beautiful and vibrant, both inside and out.

And some sage advice from one of Mary's favourite books, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, "Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure."

Please join us in celebrating Mary's life on Friday August 12th, 2022 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at Fawcett Funeral Home in Collingwood, ON at 82 Pine Street. As this is an informal visitation, please feel free to come and pay your respects at any point during these times.

In lieu of flowers, Mary and family would greatly appreciate any and all donations to go directly to the wonderful Hospice Georgian Triangle in Collingwood, who's incredible doctors, nurses, PSWs and volunteers attended to and cared for Mary so diligently and compassionately.
