Obituary for Ona Senkus
Ona Paliulyte-Senkus was born in Lithuania. When World War II ended in1944, her family was taken to Germany. From 1945-1950 she lived in Špakenberg near Hamburg in a DP camp (displaced people camp) where she went to high school. In 1950, Ona emigrated with her parents to Toronto, Canada. She studied bookkeeping in the evenings at an adult college and worked during the day. She belonged to Sea-Scouts and the Lithuanian National Dance group. She met Vytas Senkus at work. They courted for a while. One day, Vytas asked Ona if she would like to continue to work while he continued university then they should get married. Ona said yes. In 1954, Ona graduated from college and married Vytas. They were together for 41 years.
In 1956, Arvydas, their son, was born. In 1959, Vytas graduated from Toronto University with an Electrical Engineering degree. In 1964, the twins were born, Alma and Astra. In 1966, Vytas took a job as a government safety inspector for the mining industry in northern Ontario and the family moved Timmins, Ontario. Ona says that they lived like kings in Timmins for 23 years. Ona learned to play Bridge and belonged to two women’s organizations, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Maycourt Club. Both groups did charity work in their community. Ona was president of each group for two years.
In 1988, Vytas retired, they moved to Angus Ontario onto a 100 acres farm where they built a brand new home. They also like to travel. In 1994, they went on a cruise together with friends and Vytas was taken from the world.
In 1996, Ona sold the farm and moved to Wasaga Beach. Here, she joined the Lithuanian community, travelled to visit her grandchildren, played cards ( Canasta, Proferancas, Bridge ). She started to travel on her own. She went on 22 cruises and visited 58 countries in her life.
Ona repeatedly said that she had a very very good life. She always said she had good children, eight good grandchildren (Kristina, Devon, Kaitlin, Quentin, Kole, Ranata, Rasa and Zoe, great-granddaughter Peyton) good friends, and a good guardian angel who will hopefully guide her to God almighty and all her dear ones.
Family and friends will be received at Fawcett Funeral Home - Collingwood Chapel on Wednesday December 26, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. Funeral mass will take place at Lithuanian Martyrs' Church, 2185 Stavebank Rd. Mississauga at 11 a.m. on Thursday December 27, 2018. Interment at St. John’s Lithuanian Cemetery.
