Obituary for Ricki Thompson
Henderika “Ricki” Thompson
Ricki was born on July 3rd, 1942, in Niewlande, Netherlands. She was one of 7 children born to Geert & Henderika Blanke.
The family immigrated to Moorefield, Ontario in August 1951 where they settled into the farming community. Ricki often spoke of her memories of life on the farm, and the chores she and her siblings had to do before school each day.
After graduating high school, Ricki started working for the Royal Bank in Moorefield. A few years later and no possibility for advancement, Ricki left the bank and attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids Michigan, where she majored in Art.
Following college, she pursued a teaching career and found herself in Meaford, at the new Georgian Bay Secondary School where she started the Art Program and taught for many years.
One Friday after school, Ricki and a fellow teacher and good friend, Gladys, were in Collingwood enjoying a drink after work in The Quiet Room at the Arlington. It was there, on that day, that Ricki met her future husband, a local lawyer, Bob Thompson.
Together, Bob and Ricki enjoyed their beautiful home & property on the escarpment. They took great pride in maintaining their property and Ricki especially kept their gardens looking spectacular.
Ricki was involved in the community, spending many years involved with the Hospital Foundation. Ricki was exceptionally generous to Hospice and helped to provide the gardens surrounding Campbell House.
Ricki is survived by sisters Anne Lopers and Helen Blancke-Koops and brothers George Blancke (Maggie) and Henry Blancke (Joanne). Ricki is predeceased by parents Geert and Henderika Blancke, sister Jane Heemskerk (Henk), brother Jan Blancke, and brother-in-law Hank Lopers. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
Ricki will also be dearly missed by very special friends, Krista & Al Walcroft, Dean & Anne Lockhart , Tom & Laurie Baulke and families.
