Roger Alfred Roland Shackell
11 March 1940-22 April 2022
Born in Montreal, Quebec to Aubrey Claude Shackell and Esther Anderson Rowland, Roger was always an engaging character. He lost his mother when he was only four years old, which led to the empathy, sympathy, and kindness that he was known for. Roger was married to Lorna Shackell (nee Gall) on August 22nd, 1964. They started in Dorval Quebec, but moved to Collingwood, Ontario in August 1970 and have positively impacted the community ever since.
Roger is survived by his wife, Lorna, his children, Margaret (Glen) Shackell-Dowell, Nancy (Rob) Newman, and Don (Deb) Shackell, and their families: Claire and Gavin Dowell, Shalom Niyomugabo, Mitchell and Emily (Jacob Petitpas) Newman, and Nicholas Shackell. He was even blessed with a great-grandson, Nolan Petitpas, and there is another great-grandchild on the way. Roger is also survived by his siblings Audrey (Bob) Jubien, Carolyn Shackell, Bill (Suzanne) Shackell, Margaret (Ron) Lanthier, Cate Shackell, and their families.
Roger attended Sir George Williams University and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree – “Be Calm” he always said. He started working for an auto finance company repossessing vehicles. He was definitely not cut out for that, and he quickly transitioned into teaching, even though his father recommended against it. It is in teaching that he left an indelible mark on generations of students. Roger taught Consumer Education, Typing, and Law at Collingwood Collegiate Institute from 1970 to 1998. Teaching is in the Shackell blood, and all three of his children are educators.
There will be a celebration of Roger’s life in July. In the meantime, the family is hosting a private service on Friday, April 29th at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Collingwood. Please join the family by livestream using the link under Service Details. Donations in his name are welcome to be sent to Hospice Georgian Triangle or First Presbyterian Church.
