Elinor Burness Masselin died peacefully, with her husband by her side on Saturday December 7, 2019 at the Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood after a brave two year battle with brain cancer. She was predeceased by her adoring parents Joyce and William Allan. She is survived by her beloved husband Michel and their cherished daughter Chantal (Cole). She’ll be sadly missed by Michel’s sister Jacqueline and her husband Pierre and their sons Sébastien and Stéphane. She is also survived by her brother Iain and many loving relatives in France and of course her stalwart dog Ollie.

Elinor was very proud of her Scottish heritage, her parents having emigrated from Scotland to Auckland, New Zealand before she was born. She was always a very proud Kiwi and a keen supporter of the All Blacks, New Zealand National rugby team! In her late teens she bravely moved to Australia by herself where she met the man who would shortly become her husband. Michel, originally from Normandy France was travelling the world and was immediately smitten with the beautiful, vivacious Elinor. Soon married they travelled across Europe before finding themselves in Canada where they opened the ever popular Chez Michel restaurant in Craigleith in 1989. Soon after their adored daughter Chantal was born.

Elinor had a childhood passion for horses that she passed along to Chantal. From a very young age evenings and weekends were spent riding and at horse shows. Elinor rekindled her love of all things equine and rode her beloved horse Logger almost until the end of her life. She was exceptionally proud of Chantal’s accomplishments in the show ring where she naturally excelled as a Grand Prix jumper with the help of her coach Jeanne Mervyn.

In 2005 Michel and Elinor moved their home and restaurant to Creemore where they quickly became an important part of that tight knit community. Their friends and neighbours have very fond memories of fun (and delicious!) evenings at their charming French bistro. Elinor was adored by a small but loyal circle of friends and family who rallied round when she was diagnosed. No one who loved her will ever forget her amazing sense of humour, sweet Kiwi lilt, and her infectious laugh. She was kind and gentle but with a core of steel. Through her battle she fought fiercely and never gave up hope. She never complained and gave strength to those around her. We cherish our memories of sweet Elinor and are so grateful to have had her in our lives. You live in our hearts forever.

A funeral service will be held at Fawcett Funeral Home, 82 Pine St in Collingwood at 1 p.m. on Friday December 13, 2019. In lieu of flowers a donation to Hospice Georgian Triangle – Campbell House would be greatly appreciated.

On behalf of Michaelia and I, we wish to convey our most sincere condolences to Michel and all of the family. For many years Dale & Victoria Tkatch and Michaelia and I had many happy occasions at their restaurant which was rooted in good conversation with Elinor & Michel. We will miss her smiles and warmth that she shared readily with us and I am sure anyone she met. Sincerely, Peter & Michaelia Zober.

Oh Michel: We got the sad news too late to attend the funeral, but want to tell you that you and Elinor gave us lovely memories and our hearts go out to you. New Year champagne and dancing with you both at Craigleith year-by-year, and of course your friendliness whenever we made it to Chez Michel are treasures for life. Lyn and Hamish McGregor.
